What time of year should you go on your best luxury African safari?
It takes careful consideration to decide where and when to go on your best luxury african safari. Greta & Co. is here to guide you and assist in this decision. Each country offers something special and unique as far as landscape, unique activities, cultural immersive experiences, wildlife, and so much more. Your luxury African safari can usually be taken year round but we will look at your preferences of warm or cool weather and the dry and rainy season. Often if you are willing to travel just off the high season you can get a more intimate experience and avoid the crowds.
What wildlife will you see?
On your luxury African safari you will have the opportunity to see wildlife like giraffe, zebra, cheetah, wildebeest, hippo, crocodile, birds, mountain gorilla, monkey, and the big five of Africa. The big five of Africa refers to five iconic and highly sought-after animals that were originally considered the most difficult to hunt on foot. Today, they are celebrated for their majesty and are key attractions in wildlife conservation and safaris. The big five are the African Lion, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, and Rhinoceros. These animals are the focal point of the best luxury African safaris and are considered a bucket list achievement for wildlife enthusiasts.
What is a typical day on a luxury African safari?
You start with an early morning wake up knock on your door then greeted for early coffee and breakfast. Your morning game drive is filled with outstanding wildlife sightings followed by lunch back at the camp. Usually you will have about 2 hours of free time to siesta or lounge by the pool. Tea time is enjoyed late afternoon followed by an afternoon game drive. Depending on what camps/lodges you are staying you may have the opportunity for a river safari, walking safari, hot air balloon ride, or scenic helicopter tour. You will end the day with a lovely cocktail in camp by the roaring fire followed by a family style dinner where you get to share stories with others staying at the camp and the other staff members. This is such an intimate and special experience.
What is a Sundowner?
While on your game drive at sunset you will have the opportunity to experience the famous Sundowner “happy hour” of safari. Your sundowner could be set up on the front of the land cruiser, on the river or on the wide open landscape. Did you know that the gin and tonic is the official Safari sundowner drink. This drink originated during British colonialism and was a practical necessity rather than social activity. It was a medical drink made of Gin and tonic water that contains quinine that is known to treat malaria. Now it is a social drink.
How do you pack for your luxury African Safari?
Packing for a safari takes careful consideration and my number one suggestion is to pack light. On some safaris you have to take a really small bush plane so you are only allowed small soft luggage/no wheels and weight restrictions. Packing cubes are key to unpacking/repacking every few days as you move between the camps/lodges. The safari camps/lodges provide daily laundry services. See my Safari Packing Suggestions.
